Potential flooding for Vancouver Island; east side particularly vulnerable

After yesterday’s deluge of heavy rain, Vancouver Island residents should be on guard for potential flooding.

The intense Pacific storm system dropped 50 to 230 millimetres of rain across the Island, adding to Vancouver Island drainage basins. While today and Friday are supposed to be drier, the BC River Forecast Centre is cautioning the public to stay clear of rivers during high flow conditions.

The huge dump of rain could lead to quickly flowing water and potentially unstable riverbanks.

There is currently a Flood Warning for East Vancouver Island basins including:

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.
  • Chemainus River
  • Englishman River
  • Browns and Tsolum Rivers near Courtenay
  • Oyster River

There is currently a Flood Watch for Central and West Vancouver Island:

  • Gold River
  • Somass River near Port Alberni, and tributaries in the region

The BC River Forecast Centre will continue to monitor conditions.
