Edmonton police pursuit ends with arrest of man wanted for 50 warrants

EDMONTON — Edmonton police arrested two people in a stolen vehicle on Saturday, one of them was a man who had nearly 50 outstanding warrants.

Police said early Saturday morning officers were conducting surveillance on Mohammed Khair Elghadban, 35, at a home near 140 Avenue and 62 Street.

Police saw him drive away in a suspicious vehicle, so they followed.

Other officers, Air-1 and the Canine Unit was called in to help conduct a traffic stop near 127 Street and 167 Avenue, but the 2016 Ford Explorer fled the area.

Air-1 followed the SUV, which allowed police to use a spike belt at 66 Street and 158 Avenue to stop it.

Elghadban and another person got out of the vehicle and ran to a near-by strip mall, police said.

Officers surrounded the area and arrested Elghadban and a woman who was identified as Kristi Leigh Upright.

The vehicle was discovered to be stolen, and $2,900 of cash, 52 grams of methamphetamine, 2.3 grams of heroin, 6.5 grams of cocaine, and 35 diazepam pills were found inside, according to police.

The drugs had a combined street value of just under $7500. Police also found bear spray and gun ammunition.

Elghadban had 46 outstanding warrants for his arrest related to drugs, weapons possession, as well as money and identity fraud and recognizance breaches.

Upright was charged with five counts of possession for the purpose of trafficking, possessing property under $5,000, and four counts of breach of recognizance.

Police said the pair could face more charges after several personal identity items were found inside the stolen vehicle.

Elghadban and Upright are scheduled to appear in court Thursday, Feb. 4.
