Bear shot in downtown Canmore

Officials say they had no choice but to shoot a black bear in the centre of Canmore on Sunday.

The black bear was spotted around a dozen times that day.

After a cyclist spotted the animal in a tree on Policeman’s Creek trail, Fish and Wildlife officers cordoned off the trail and shot the bear with three tranquillizer darts.

It wasn’t enough to subdue the bear, and officers were forced to kill it, abandoning their original plan to relocate the animal.

They describe the bear as “severely habituated”, a potentially dangerous situation for town residents.

This is the time of year when bears move into the valley looking for food, and residents are being reminded to dispose of garbage properly, and not to leave edibles, even bird seed, outdoors.
