Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall to arrive in Regina
Prince Charles and his wife Camilla have landed in Canada for a four-day tour celebrating the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. Festivities begin in New Brunswick tomorrow – on Victoria Day at the Canadian Forces Base in Gagetown. After a stop in Ontario the Royals will visit the Queen City come Wednesday. The couple will participate in a centennial celebration at the Legislature and will tour the First Nations University. Stay tuned to Global Regina for details and highlights through-out the Royal Visit. In other Royal news a slice of wedding cake from Will and Kate’s wedding is apparently up for auction online. The description of the item says it was given to guests of the wedding and includes a 16-page program. The current bid is over one thousand British Pounds.

NATO meetings continue in Chicago
The 28 member nations of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization are meeting for two days with the future of Afghanistan at the top of their agenda. As talks wrap up Monday Prime Minister Stephen Harper is expected to announce more funding by Canada for Afghanistan’s military. In total NATO countries are expected to spend $4.1 billion on the Afghan military post-2014. This summit follows two days of talks by G-8 leaders on how to deal with Europe’s continuing economic crisis.
Egypt holds presidential elections
More than a year after the uprising to push Egypt’s Hosni Mubarak from power – elections will be held to find his replacement. Sunday marked the last day of campaigning before voting on Wednesday and Thursday. There have been countless clashes between civilians and the military in the past year, the later has held power since the fall of Mubaraks’s regime. If no candidate wins the first round outright – a runoff election is scheduled for June 16-17.
2012 National Gymnastics Championships tumble into Regina
Canada’s best gymnasts will compete in Men’s and Women’s artistic, rhythmic and trampoline May 21-26 at Evraz Place. This is just the second time in the competition’s history that all four disciplines are competed under one roof. More than 1000 athletes will be part of the competition, many of them building towards a spot on Canada’s national team for the London Olympics.
