2012 Regina Highland Games

A little bit of Scotland made its way across the pond for the 2012 Regina Highland Games on May 20th. The event featured Scottish bands and some traditional Scottish sports.

Competitor, Sean Langford explains some origins, “The hammer came from Blacksmiths hammers…figure its just men being men out in the field. One of the guys just underhanded pitches something like that and the next guy says well I can beat that with the same weight.”

The competitive events aren’t only for the men. Women get a chance too…but it takes more than just brute strength.

Kim Fleischhaker says, “All this is very hard actually. I train at Crossfit Regina and we are stronger girls, but this takes a lot technique.”

One other event is the caber toss – a giant log is lifted then launched into the air.  The goal is to flip the caber one complete rotation.

Langford says he is no rookie to the games, “I have been to Hawaii and Scotland. I have gone down to the United States. I’ve gone to both coasts of Canada and everywhere in between. It’s shown me a lot of the world.”

This is the 13th year of the competition and it keeps gaining momentum.
