Manitoba Scotties final to feature Kerri Einarson and Kristy McDonald

The two top seeded skips at the 2016 Manitoba Scotties will face each other for the provincial title.

East St. Paul’s Kerri Einarson slipped past St. Vital’s Shannon Birchard 8-3 in eight ends in Sunday morning’s semifinal to advance to the championship game. Einarson will face the Granite Curling Club’s Kristy McDonald who qualified for the final with a 7-5 victory over Einarson in Saturday’s 1-vs-1 page playoff.

McDonald has never won a provincial women’s curling championship as a skip. She lost in back-to-back finals in 2005 and 2006. McDonald was also a semi-finalist in 2007, 2008 and 2009. She joined Chelsea Carey’s rink as a third the following year before winning her first Manitoba title in 2014.

Einarson meanwhile is playing in her third straight provincial final. She lost to Jennifer Jones in 2015 and Carey in 2014.

The winner of the 2016 Manitoba Scotties will represent the province at the national women’s curling championship in Grand Prairie, Alberta from February 20-28.
