TORONTO – The union representing Air Canada pilots says a last attempt to reach a negotiated settlement has failed and the dispute will be going to arbitration.
The two sides agreed last month to hold 10 days of last ditch talks to prevent having a settlement imposed on them. The chairman of the Master Executive Council of the Air Canada Pilots Association says the union did everything possible to reach an agreement. Captain Jean-Marc Belanger says it would be a vast understatement to say he is disappointed.

The union says both sides will prepare submissions to the federal arbitrator appointed in the dispute. The threat of a lockout of the pilots prompted the federal government to intervene in the dispute earlier this year with back-to-work legislation. The legislation allowed an arbitrator to impose a settlement.
