There’s routs and then there’s what Winnipegger Matt Dunstone did Saturday at the Canadian Junior Curling Championship in Stratford, Ontario.

The Granite skip opened the bonspiel with a decisive 33-1 eight-end win over Nunavut’s Arthur Siksik. Dunstone hung up six points in the first frame before stealing quads in the second and third ends. He then swiped another five points in the fourth. Nunavut scored it’s only rock in the fifth. Dunstone replied by putting up six points in the sixth. He finished off the game by stealing a triple in the seventh and five points in the eighth end.

It’s highly unlikely Dunstone broke any records according to Curling Canada. Officials say there were some major thrashings in the 1960’s when teams were required to play 12 ends.

Manitoba will look to improve to 2-0 on Sunday when it faces Ontario. Dunstone is playing in his first Canadian Junior Men’s Curling Championship since winning it back in 2013. He also captured bronze that same year at the World Junior Curling Championship.
