Alberta government to release report into how Slave Lake fire fought

EDMONTON – Alberta is releasing a report into how the devastating fire in Slave Lake was fought last year.

Environment and Sustainable Resource Development Minister Diana McQueen and Bill Sweeney, the head of the independent committee which wrote the report, will announce the findings later this morning.

An out-of-control blaze on May 15th, 2011, wiped out more a third of the town northwest of Edmonton.

Flames destroyed more than 500 homes and buildings and forced thousands of people to flee for their lives at an estimated cost of almost one billion dollars.

Another review, led by consulting firm KPMG, is studying how well the province handled the evacuation.

Some residents have complained that they weren’t given enough warning and some who left town were forced to turn around because roads were closed.
