MONTREAL — A man could face charges of mischief after he reportedly fell into a construction hole on Saint-Denis Street Wednesday morning.

Montreal police said it had reason to believe the man may have been a merchant who jumped into the hole in protest of all the construction on the street.

The man was trapped at the bottom of a trench several metres deep between a concrete and temporary sidewalk.

Firefighters and paramedics arrived on the scene at 11 a.m. to get him out of the hole and take him to hospital.

The rescue wasn’t simple.

“There were live electrical wires and gas lines were running in the hole itself,” said Ian Ritchie, Chief of Operations of the Montreal Fire Department.

“They had to ensure that it was safe, not only for the person in the hole, but for the firefighters also.”

Urgences-Santé had specialized teams onsite to help.

Officers are investigating to determine if the work zone was secure.
