EDMONTON — Edmonton Public Schools has made a decision to deal with increasing enrolment pressure at Michael Strembitsky School (MSS) in Summerside.

Starting in the fall, MSS will no longer offer Kindergarten. All Kindergarten students in the MSS attendance area will attend Satoo School, about seven kilometres away, for 2016-17 and Grade 1 for 2017-18.

The Edmonton Public School Board’s plan is to have those kids start Grade 2 at MSS in 2018-19. There are currently eight Kindergarten classes at Michael Strembitsky.

Students living in the northeast corner of Summerside—north and east of Stanton Drive and south of Ellerslie Road—will be permanently redesignated to Ellerslie School starting in fall 2016-17. This applies to all students from Kindergarten to Grade 9 living in the area who currently attend MSS. (See boundary maps below).

Those living in Summerside South—south of Savaryn Drive and east of 88 Street—will go to Menisa School for Kindergarten to Grade 6 and Dan Knott School for Grades 7-9.

Out of attendance area students who do not live in the MSS attendance area and were not previously grandfathered will no longer be able to attend MSS.

Out of district students, including non-Edmonton residents and Catholic-declared students, will no longer be able to attend MSS.

Yellow school bus service will be available for qualifying students who attend their primary designated school.

The EPSB said all students will be guaranteed entry into their primary designated school. Students may choose to go to another school if the school has space and the student meets the entrance requirements.

Students who live in Summerside West and Summerside South are part of the secondary attendance area for MSS. If there is room at the school after all of the primary attendance area students enrol, students living in these neighbourhoods may have the chance to attend MSS. If too many students apply, those allowed entry will be selected at random.

Pre-enrolment and Kindergarten registration for the 2016-17 school year begins Feb. 2. Students are guaranteed entry at their designated school as long as they pre-enrol by April 15.

The EPSB said yellow bus service only supports elementary students attending their primary designated school.

This is not the first time the school boundaries in the area have been redrawn.
