SASKATOON – Lamp posts from the century old Traffic Bridge are among the only portions of the structure which will be repurposed. According to Tristan Rakowski of Rakowski Cartage and Wreckage Ltd., the demolition company, “the lamp posts are spoken for by local artists.”
Rakowski would not give details about who has acquired the lamp posts or what they’ll be used for but confirms they were spoken for long before the demolition last Sunday.
From the two spans recently demolished, more than 800 tonnes of waste was created. Half of it is steel which will be melted down at Evraz Place in Regina for reuse.
According to Rakowski, wood from the bridge, totalling approximately 200 tonnes will be recycled by a company in Craik. PSI Technologies in Saskatoon will ground the 200 tonnes of asphalt into aggregate and the remaining rubbish, about 25 tonnes, will go to the landfill.

Many have shown interest in acquiring a piece of the historic bridge but according to Rakowski, the use of lead based paint and rust inhibitors make it a liability.
Cleanup will take 10 to 14 days from demolition.
Rakowski Cartage and Wreckage Ltd. will take care of the remaining demolition including the span nearest downtown will come down at the end of February.

This is the first century-old truss bridge the company has demolished and it was in “worse shape” than anticipated said Rakowski. He also said last Sunday’s demolition went “exactly as planned.”
The $462,000 light strand on the north side of the bridge will be recycled.
