REGINA – Saskatchewan is boasting the lowest unemployment rate (seasonally adjusted) among provinces, but the numbers may not be as rosy as they seem.

The unemployment rate in Saskatchewan is sitting at 5.5 per cent but at the same time last year the unemployment rate was only sitting at 3.6 per cent.

That means there are about 10,000 fewer people in the workforce in Saskatchewan compared to last year at this time.

The Saskatchewan NDP also noted that the Statistics Canada report shows that off-reserve First Nations unemployment rate is now sitting at 19.9 per cent which is worse than the 19.3 per cent unemployment rate from last year.

Saskatchewan still has the lowest unemployment rate among provinces and it’s well below the national average of 7.1 per cent.
