WINNIPEG — Roland Tessier is Winnipeg’s newest millionaire, and the first millionaire lottery winner of 2016. Tessier won the $1 million on December 23 LOTTO 6/49 draw. He held off on virtually spending it until it was a done deal.
“I’ve always been of the opinion that you don’t count your chickens before they’re hatched,” said Tessier. “Until I had the cheque in my hand, this win was still an egg.”
Tessier bought his $9 LOTTO 6/49 quick pick ticket from RWR Bison Lottery Kiosk, located in the Real Canadian Superstore at 80 Bison Drive in Winnipeg. He checked his ticket the morning after the draw – first on the internet, and then at a local store.
“I checked in on the ticket checker first, so I knew I’d won something big,” he remembered. “Then I asked the clerk to check it, and I told her, ‘You’re going to be surprised.’”
Tessier said he hasn’t made any firm plans for how he’ll spend it, but will probably invest in some home renovations.
