OWEN SOUND, Ont. – Owen Sound council fought to keep its jail open and now faces the challenge of getting rid of the 19th century building.
Grey County had leased the property to the province – which closed the jail in December – but that expires at the end of June.

According to Mayor Deb Haswell, the jail will be turned over to the city as per an agreement with the county that was struck back in the 1960s.
Haswell says it’s problematic considering the city is trying to sell off its surplus property.
Haswell cringes at the potential costs associated with maintenance on the property, but she admits there’s not much the city can do.
Haswell notes Owen Sound already has 163 surplus properties to deal with. (CFOS)
