They’ve been a part of Calgary schools for 35 years, but times have changed since 1976 and school Resource Officers’ are helping students with bigger issues than ever before.
Being a high school student in Calgary in 2012 comes with a lot of extra pressures.
That’s why students like Christian take comfort in having a police officer at their school, who are always willing to help.
“I think they help keep the school safe and they are the first place to go to if you have a question about the law or about driving, something like that…. and are positive role models for people having troubles,” says Christian.

“The door of my office is always open. It’s a revolving door, and they hear things on the media on TV and TV shows…. and they come talk to me about drugs or any issues,” says Cst. Ron Kubicek, School Resource Officer at St. Francis High School.
Cst. Kubicek says social media has expanded the list of issues he now helps students with.
“The online things…. computer, text messaging… the bullying and harassment is going on at home, and then at school,” says Kubicek
There are currently 21 school resource officers assigned to Calgary schools.
They deal with students and parents, trying to keep students on the right path.
In 35 years, police officers in Jr. and Sr. high schools have worked with more than 770,000 students.
