Kelowna – Police say two people were ejected from their ATV in Kelowna early Thursday morning and sent to hospital, and now one of them may potentially faces criminal charges.

Just before 3 a.m., Kelowna RCMP responded to a single-vehicle ATV crash on Gordon Drive at Raymer Avenue.

Witnesses told police they saw the ATV serving along the road before it flipped, causing the two riders to be ejected from their seats.

Mounties say they noticed ‘a strong odour of liquor’ on the 28-year-old man who was driving the ATV and a blood sample was taken for an impaired driving investigation.

The man is being treated in hospital for serious, but non-life threatening injuries. The passenger, a 21-year-old Kelowna woman, was also taken to hospital and treated for less serious injuries.

“Neither the driver of the ATV [nor] his passenger were wearing helmets, nor were they dressed for the freezing cold temperatures,” says Cst. Jesse O’Donaghey. “If it wasn’t for the member of the public who witnessed this crash, stopped to assist the crash victims and called 911 there may have been a different outcome.”

The Kelowna man faces potential charges of impaired driving causing bodily harm, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, driving an uninsured vehicle and driving while over .08, pending the results of the analysis of his blood. He was issued a 24-hour driving prohibition.
