One person is dead and three others were taken to hospital following a residential fire in Scarborough early Tuesday morning.
Fire crews responded to the call around 6:30 a.m. at a bungalow located on Birkdale Road in between Pomeroy Street and Brookridge Drive in the area of Midland and Ellesmere.
Toronto Fire officials say four people were transported to hospital with one person succumbing to their injuries. They estimate the damage at approximately $300,000 and say it’s currently unclear if there were any smoke alarms in the home.
Two of those suffered from minor smoke inhalation were identified as 35 and 56-year-old adult males. The age and sex of the other two victims were not released.

One person remains in hospital with critical injuries, officials said.
“The fire started in the basement. When crews arrived there was heavy smoke and flames coming from the front of the basement,” said Toronto Fire Commander Danny MacIsaac.
MacIsaac said there were seven people living in the home at the time of the fire and crews rescued four from the basement.
“The people living in the upstairs appear to be fine,” he said.
MacIsaac also said five pets were located and among them were two dead dogs.
A neighbour told Global News he woke up to the sound of alarms and smelled smoke in his home before noticing the fire came from the next door.
“When I opened the door I saw the smoke coming out of that house and I immediately came to know this is not my house,” said Girish Kapoor.
“I evacuated everybody in my house. I called 911 and gave them the complete description that what’s happening.”
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
