Exactly half of American voters say they would be embarrassed if Donald Trump were to win the presidential election, according to a poll released by Quinnipiac University Tuesday.
The poll also finds that the real estate tycoon would lose to both of the leading Democratic candidates, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Sen. Bernie Sanders, if an election were held immediately and it wouldn’t be close.
Clinton tops Trump by seven points, 47 to 40 per cent, while Sanders has 51-38 per cent lead over the Republican frontrunner.
While Trump still leads his Republican rivals, Sen. Ted Cruz has closed the gap just six weeks before the Iowa Caucuses open and the chase for nominations truly gets underway.

The poll shows Trump with just a four-point edge over Cruz, who recorded 24 per cent of support from Republican party voters. Cruz would also fare better against Clinton in a head-to head vote as they both received 44 per cent of the public’s support.
“Hillary Clinton tops him. Sen. Bernie Sanders hammers him and Sen. Ted Cruz is snapping at his heels. Can a candidate that half the American electorate thinks is an embarrassment win in November?” asks Tim Malloy, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Poll.
