HALIFAX – A group of inmates at a Nova Scotia prison are helping to make the holidays a little more joyful for some local children.
Hannah Cavicchi-Burrows, a social worker at the Northeast Nova Scotia Correctional Facility, says a group of offenders put forward a proposal to raise funds to purchase toys for children in need in the community.

In total, $734 was raised. $300 came from inmates, with the rest donated by staff at the facility.
Cavicchi-Burrows says the money was used to purchase toys that were on wishlists given to Big Brothers Big Sisters.
Once the toys were purchased, offenders wrapped the gifts at the facility and made a card to go with each one.
Cavicchi-Burrows says the initiative has “been a wonderful way for folks to give back to the community.”
