Rash of break and enters in Central Halifax spur police warning

HALIFAX – Police are warning people to be aware and ensure their windows and doors are locked after a recent series of break and enters in the city.

Within the past two weeks, police responded to six reports of break and enters on the peninsula, with a variety of items stolen from each home or business:

  • December 8: Unlocked shed in the 5000 block of Shirley Street, bags of recyclables taken.
  • December 9: Vacant residence in the 2000 block of Beech Street, nothing taken.
  • December 10: Business in the 6000 block of Coburg Road, electronics taken.
  • December 10: Vacant residence in the 2000 block of Connaught Avenue, nothing taken.
  • December 10: Residence where the homeowner was away in the 2000 block of Kline Street, computers taken.
  • December 14: Unlocked shed at a residence in the 1000 block of Robie Street, bicycle taken.

Police say they don’t know if the break and enters are connected, and they have no suspects.

If anyone has information about the break ins, or who has had a similar incident happen to them, they are asked to call police at 902-490-5016 or contact www.crimestoppers.ns.ca.

Police also give the following tips for keeping your home safe, and reducing risk of being broken into:

  • Make sure windows and doors are locked before you leave your house.
  • Place a piece of wood along the tracks of sliding windows or patio doors.
  • If you have an alarm, be sure it’s activated when you leave your house.
  • If you see suspicious activity in your neighbourhood contact police right away, and try to have a good description of the suspect, including height, and  look to see if there are any cars parked nearby that you can get a license plate number and description from.
