Toddler critically injured at dayhome

A 21-month old girl remains in critical condition after she was discovered unconscious and not breathing at a southeast dayhome.

Emergency crews were called out Wednesday afternoon to a home in the 100 block of Elgin Heath S.E.

The girl was rushed to Alberta Children’s Hospital.

It isn’t clear if the toddler was harmed intentionally of if it was accidental.

Because of her severe injuries, major crime detectives with the Calgary Police Service are investigating.

“In instances like this where injuries are severe, it’s common protocol to call in major crimes to lead the investigation”, says Inspector Mike Tillotson.

There are an estimated 8500 dayhomes in Calgary that are not monitored.

That means the operators are not subject to criminal record checks or random inspections.
