Breakfast Buzz: What do you think of Miss Canada’s costume?

SASKATOON – Steve Harvey’s mix up in crowning Miss Universe isn’t the only part of the pageant that got people talking. When the Canadian contestant, Paola Nunez Valde, showcased her national costume people online were quick to critique the carved, sparkly totem pole.

Much of the backlash had to do with cultural appropriation and the sexualization of a traditional First Nations symbol. Officials for Miss Universe Canada released a statement to try and curb some of the backlash, explaining that it was a representation of this years Miss Canada’s Dominican heritage.

“Unfortunately, there’s been a tremendous MISUNDERSTANDING regarding the context about Miss Canada’s National Costume,” reads the statement posted on Instagram.
