Calgary police bring back black and white police cars

Calgary police unveiled plans for new black and white police cars on Thursday.

Police cars in the city will once again be black and white, a colour scheme that according to research enhances visibility and public recognition.

The CPS was forced to make some changes to their vehicles after the Ford stopped production of the Crown Victoria, traditionally used by police.

Police have enough of the Crown Victoria’s to cover the next two years of scheduled fleet replacement, but will be piloting a new Dodge Charger that will be seen at local events throughout the next year.

The transition to new vehicles is more economical too, as police say based on current pricing for the cars, and the reduced cost of the proposed decaling, the move could save the Service in excess of $1 million.

However, It could take up to two years before the first black and white cars are used operationally, and up to five years before the entire fleet is replaced.

Police say once the black and white vehicles are used operationally, they will launch a public campaign to let people know what the new cars look like.
