REGINA – The MLA for Regina Douglas Park announced Wednesday that he will not be running in the upcoming provincial election.

Russ Marchuk, who has been the Saskatchewan Party MLA for Regina Douglas Park since 2011, has decided to retire instead of seeking re-election.

“I am absolutely honoured to have been able to serve as the MLA for Regina Douglas Park for the past four years,” said Marchuk.

“It is my intention to stay active in the Douglas Park constituency, including giving my full support to the Saskatchewan Party candidate, whoever that may be.”
In the 2011 election, Marchuk ousted Dwain Lingenfelter, who was the NDP leader at the time.

Lingenfelter then resigned the party’s leadership.

In September 2013, Marchuk stepped down from his position as Education Minister and became legislative secretary to the new Minister of Education.

During his 46 years in education, Marchuk has also worked as a teacher, principal, chairman of the Regina Public School Board, and an education consultant with Treaty Four First Nations Schools.

“There are many accomplishments to be proud of, but I am most proud of two new schools in our constituency – Arcola Community School and Douglas Park Elementary School,” said Marchuk.

Premier Brad Wall thanked Marchuk for his service on Monday.

“I can’t think of anyone who has done more at every level in the education system then Russ Marchuk,” said Wall.

“Under Russ’s strong support for results-based education innovation, teachers, administrators and school divisions felt encouraged to develop and offer programs like the Tell Them From Me survey and the Saskatchewan Reads literacy initiative.”

Marchuk will continue as the Regina Douglas Park MLA until the provincial election in April.
