WINNIPEG — Southern Manitoba, including Winnipeg is being hit with a blast of snow, which caused a slick morning drive in the city and on the highways which has continued into the afternoon.

Manitoba RCMP tweeted a warning shortly before 5 p.m. to drivers that highways “have severely deteriorated”.

Light snow was reported at the airport at 2 a.m. Wednesday morning. Environment Canada said snowfall amounts have been near 10 centimetres by the afternoon. Five to ten more could be expected before tapering off Thursday.

Gusty northwesterly winds are expected to develop behind the system. The winds in combination with the fresh snow will result in blowing snow and poor visibility. This is expected to last into Thursday.

There were reports of cars in ditches along Highway 59 coming northbound towards the city from the south Wednesday morning.

In the city, driving conditions were slow. Just before 8 a.m. a car slid and ended up on its roof on McPhillips Street just before the Perimeter Highway.
Winnipeg and other areas across southern Manitoba are expecting approximately 10 to 15 centimeters through the day with up to five centimeters tonight as well.

The highest totals are expected to fall in areas between Pilot Mound, Winnipeg and Bissett.
