One-punch assault outside Vancouver pub leaves man with serious injuries

Vancouver Police are looking for a man responsible for a one-punch assault outside a Vancouver pub in August.

The victim was left lying on the sidewalk, unconscious and bloodied, and suffered serious injuries.

Just after 10 p.m. on Aug. 31, a 49-year-old man was having a cigarette and talking with other patrons outside Pub 340, at 340 Cambie Street. Video of the incident shows the suspect inside the bar before the assault occurs outside. The attacker punched the victim once, then simply walked away.

The victim was taken to hospital with a head injury and brain bleed. He spent three weeks in hospital and many more weeks recovering at home, but police say he has made a full recovery.

The suspect is described as aboriginal, in his 30s, 5’10” tall, with a medium build, light complexion and several tattoos. He was wearing a black jacket with the word “Headrush” on the back.

Police say there does not appear to be any prior contact between the victim and the suspect, or with any of this three friends, until a short conversation just prior to the assault.

“This was a cowardly act by someone with no regard for the consequences of his actions,” said VPD Cst. Brian Montague in a release. “One punch can have a life-altering outcome for the victim, their family, and the attacker.”
