Saskatchewan is a hot spot for hockey players and curlers. The provincial government wants to make sure the rinks these athletes grow up on are still open and the ice is ready.

Applicants who haven’t yet taken advantage of the 2015 Community Rink Affordability Grant only have until Tuesday, Dec. 15 to submit registrations.

This is the fourth year it’s being offered to Saskatchewan’s community-owned indoor skating and curling rinks that could use a little elbow grease. The grant can be used to offset the cost of rink operations, facility maintenance and minor capital upgrades.

Around 1,941 recreational ice surfaces in the province have taken advantage of $4.8 million in funding over the past three years.

Recreationists and communities may depend on such infrastructure that provides attractive and safe places in which to play, train and socialize.

“Our winters don’t seem as long when we step out on the ice and participate in the activities we enjoy,” said Mark Docherty, Saskatchewan minister of parks, culture and sport.

Successful grant applicants can receive $2,500 per ice surface.

Communities, schools, non-profits and First Nations are eligible to apply online.
