TORONTO – The TTC – and commuters, no doubt – are hoping to see faster commute times starting Monday as all streetcar lines begin all-door boarding.

The new system allows riders to board a streetcar through all doorways, provided they carry some proof of payment, such as a transfer or Metropass.

TTC inspectors will watch for fare-jumpers, who risk a fine of $235.

All-door boarding was already permitted on several crowded streetcar lines, including the King, Queen and Spadina lines.

Past transit studies have pointed to boarding times as a major factor in streetcar slowdowns, adding as many as 15 minutes to the King line in particular.
