Truro double-homicide case to return to court

HALIFAX — The case of a Truro man charged with two counts of first-degree murder is scheduled to return to Nova Scotia Supreme court this week.

Gerald Rushton is accused of killing his common-law wife and her daughter two years ago.

The bodies of Elizabeth MacPherson, 53, and Brittany MacPherson, 24, were discovered inside their home on Pictou Road in Truro on December 27, 2013.

Police have never said how either woman was killed. Rushton was also found inured inside the home and was taken to hospital, where he recovered.

The 49-year-old’s trial was scheduled to start in October. Jury selection was complete and on the day opening arguments were scheduled to begin, Rushton fired his lawyer, resulting in a major delay for the case.

Rushton will now be represented by Halifax lawyer Luke Craggs. A pre-trial conference will be held December 14.
