WINNIPEG — While many of us continue to enjoy the mild December, not everyone is happy about the melting we’ve experienced.
The final month of 2015 is becoming a memorable one with its “warm” start.
In fact, Winnipeg set a record on Tuesday when the mercury hit 5 Celsius breaking an old record set back in 1990.
Those with snowmobiles or snowboards have been out of luck so far this year. But skiing enthusiasts (of the cross-country variety at least) have been able to get out and enjoy their sport, in most places.
Some areas of the province – especially those in the southwest corner have little to no snow on the ground.

Stony Mountain Ski Resort usually opens their doors to skiers and snowboarders December 1st. This year they are two and a half weeks behind schedule.
“Most years, ninety per cent of our snow is man made,” said Heather Campbell-Dewar, co-owner of Stony Mountain Ski Resort. “We need about three more days (of cold weather) to get two runs and one lift going.”
The resort needs -7 C or colder for snowmaking, a number we haven’t seen in weeks.
Last season they were able to open on time because we had a colder November, and they were able to make snow.
On December 11th, 2014 we actually had less snow pack (snow on the ground) than this year. One centimetre on the ground in 2014, compared to the 5 centimetres we have right now.
Mother Nature is finally playing ball next week with a stretch of colder overnight temperatures beginning on Monday.
That’s good news for Stony Mountain as they are keeping their fingers crossed to open Friday, December 18th.
Those without snow making machines will still need a little help from the forecast to get going on their outdoor activities.
