UPDATE: Province announces new highway bypass in St. Norbert

WINNIPEG — South Winnipeg will soon have a new highway link that will bypass St. Norbert.

The province said the new St. Norbert Bypass will help speed up trucker’s commute around the area.

“As our economy continues to grow, we will increase our investments in transportation infrastructure to ensure commercial and other traffic flows safely and smoothly through the capital region,” said Minister Steve Ashton.

The project complements a plan to improve traffic flows between Highway 75, the Perimeter Highway and Centreport.

The 6 kilometre stretch of highway will include four lanes, two in each direction, two cloverleafs and a bridge over the La Salle River. The speed limit is expected to be 100 km/hr.

“The planning underway now will position Winnipeg and Manitoba to grow the future economy and ensure the capital regions have a high-quality transportation system well into the future,” said Ashton. The project will be an investment of $400 million and started in the next five years according to Ashton.

The province said the projects will be coordinated so the timing of design and construction will allow new interchanges, such as Waverley Street and Kenaston Boulevard, and a new bypass to smoothly tie together.

Previous announcements include a bypass around Headingley and the elimination of traffic lights on the south Perimeter.

The Manitoba government committed to a three-year extension of its infrastructure plan. 10 to 20 properties are expected to be expropriated for the project along the river area.
