Candy Cane Lane soon to hit million-pound food milestone

EDMONTON – An Edmonton Food Bank charity drive is about to hit a huge milestone.

This year, Candy Cane Lane is expected to reach one million pounds of all-time food donations. Since starting two decades ago, Candy Cane Lane, working with Edmonton’s Food Bank, has donated just over 995,000 total pounds of food.

This year is expected to push the campaign over the one-million pound mark.

The 2015 Candy Cane Lane campaign will officially be launched on Friday. This year, the Food Bank hopes to raise $1.4 million and 275,000 kilograms of food through Candy Cane Lane.

This year’s campaign comes as an increasing number of Albertans find themselves needing to use food banks. In September, the Food Bank’s annual report said the organization saw a 14 per cent rise in people needing their services.

In the 18 months before the report was released, between 15,000 and 16,000 were using the Food Bank each month.
