Arsonist starts three small blazes in Burnaby overnight

The Burnaby Fire Department puts out one of three small fires that are suspected to be caused by the same person in the early hours of December 5, 2015.

Firefighters in Burnaby are asking for help from the RCMP after a series of fires broke out early this morning.

There were at least three incidents near the New Westminster border – two garbage can fires, and a Molotov cocktail that failed to explode.

“It’s obvious someone was moving through the area, probably think they’re having some fun, but it’s not really fun,” says Burnaby Fire Department Captain Michael Hurley.

The Molotov cocktail was found at 10th Avenue and Langley Street around 3:30 a.m. Shortly after, they found a large plume of smoke coming from a nearby garbage can.

Another fire emanating from a garbage can – this time with some sort of chemical involved – was found a short time later near Armstrong Avenue. A shed caught fire in that instance, but no one was hurt.

There are no suspects in any of the fires yet, but Hurley believes one person started all of them.

“If there are some kids doing this, please think about what you’re doing,” he says.

Anyone with information is asked to call Burnaby RCMP.
