Three people “swarmed” by up to 15 young people near Halifax Common

HALIFAX — Police are investigating an attack by 10-15 young people on Sunday morning near the Halifax Common on Cogswell Street that injured three people.

In a press release, police said two males and one female were “swarmed” at about 1 a.m. near the Emera Oval.

The female was punched, resulting in her being knocked to the ground, and her wallet was taken by a female attacker.

One male victim was also punched in the face and knocked to the ground; he was then punched and kicked.

The second male victim started fighting the swarm, and then the attackers fled the area, running toward North Park Street.

Emergency Health Services treated the victims, and they were then released.

The group of attackers were described by Halifax Regional Police as black and wearing dark clothing; the female had dreadlocks.

Police have stepped up patrols in the area due to similar events over the past month; the move is set to be reassessed in the coming days, according to Staff Sergeant Greg Mason.

Viki Samuels-Stewart, project manager of CeaseFire Halifax in Dartmouth, said members of the group are “working the street” to try to find and help the suspects.

“Some of the people that work for CeaseFire have been people who have been in conflict with the law in the past,” she said.
