EDMONTON — There was applause, a standing ovation, and hugs for former Ward 12 Councillor Amarjeet Sohi on Friday as he returned to Edmonton council chambers for the first time since being elected Liberal MP for Edmonton-Mill Woods in October.

Mayor Don Iveson welcomed Sohi during council proceedings.
“I think I speak for all of us, that we were…sad to lose you from this team,” said Iveson, “but great to see you get called up to the majors – to mix metaphors around sports – to represent not only Edmonton but the municipal perspective at the federal cabinet table.”
Sohi is also the federal infrastructure minister, and met with the mayor this morning in that official capacity.

He also took some time to clean out his old desk and speak with reporters.
“I just feel humbled and honoured by the acknowledgement and the words of kindness from the mayor,” Sohi said. “And meeting with my former colleagues. It kind of breaks my heart to say that.”
With Sohi now living part-time in Ottawa, the mayor took to Twitter to remind him who to cheer for in this Sunday’s Grey Cup game.
Sohi represented Ward 12 for eight years. A byelection to fill his seat will be held February 22.
