Support staff at two prisons in Saskatchewan are feeling the impact of the decision by the federal government to close three federal prisons in Ontario and Quebec.
The Union of Solicitor-General Employees says 22 positions between the Saskatchewan Penitentiary and Riverbend Institution in Prince Albert will be axed over the next two years.
The notices went out Thursday.
However, the union says the Correctional Service of Canada will attempt to find the employees new jobs within the institutions.
The affected positions include administrative support, programming, nurses, security intelligence and at least one management job.
Kevin Grabowsky, regional president for the Union of Canada Correctional Officers, says the notices are not affecting guard positions at the Saskatchewan Penitentiary.
