Bob Marley documentary premieres in theatres and online

TORONTO – Fans of iconic reggae musician Bob Marley are flocking to see a film about his life today.

The American premiere of documentary “Marley”, produced by Charles Steel and directed by Kevin MacDonald, hits theatres and social media networks on Friday.

The documentary details Bob Marley’s life and career, from the early days up until his death. The film, with the support of his family members, who provided consent and rare footage of Marley, shows one of the closes recounts of his life.

Robert Nesto Marley, born on February 6th, 1945, would have been 67 this year. The reggae singer has roots in Saint Ann Parish in Jamaica. He left school at age fourteen to start a music career. With his friends, also reggae legends, Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer, Marley went from his first group The Teenagers with a ska-rocksteady sound to The Wailers and then to rock the world with his solo career under the name Bob Marley.

His awards are numerous – from his Peace Medal of the Third World given by the United Nations in 1978, to his induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994 and his induction into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2010. Marley has been recognized worldwide-not only for exposing the world to reggae music but also for his activism and commitment to giving a voice to the underprivileged.

Bob Marley’s fans in Jamaica were treated to the premiere of ” Marley” movie at Emancipation Park on Thursday. The movie is scheduled to be in Canadian theatres on May 3 and will be streamed live on Facebook in the U.S., Jamaica, Puerto Rico and the Bahamas today. This will be the first time Facebook will offer to screen a film simultaneous to its theatre screening. iTunes is also offering the documentary on demand.

In addition to the thrill of seeing the intimate details of this international reggae legend’s life, fans who watch the documentary via Facebook will be contributing to charity- proceeds from the live stream will go to Save The Children, an international organization that raises funds for the health and safety of children around the world.
