Gore in Leonardo DiCaprio’s ‘The Revenant’ causing theatre walk-outs

If you’ve seen the trailer for Leonardo DiCaprio‘s upcoming The Revenant, you’ll know that it looks raw, unforgiving and brutal. Some movie critics and early audiences have been able to see the film, and there have been many reports of people walking out of the theatre due to The Revenant‘s unflinching gore.

The Alejandro G. Inarritu (Birdman, 21) film, which also stars Tom Hardy, follows a fur trapper (DiCaprio) left for dead after he survives attacks by other men and wild animals. The movie, which has a running time over two-and-a-half hours, focuses on the trapper’s quest to seek revenge against those who wronged him.

The film screened in Beverly Hills earlier this week and several people walked out, apparently unable to handle the gore.

Common belief among critics is the culprit is a scene featuring DiCaprio’s character and a grizzly bear. He is mauled within inches of his life by the bear, and then left behind by the rest of his hunting group. Many other survival scenarios in the film most likely spare no gruesome detail.

“This was the most difficult film that I think any of us have done,” DiCaprio said, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

“It was like rock climbing without a rope,” Inarritu added at a Q&A.

Overall, people seem very pleased with the film, and DiCaprio is generating some major Oscar buzz. This might indeed be his year to win.
