The resignation comes after McVicar did several interviews with reporters on Monday, releasing personal health details about independent MLA Andrew Younger.

“Mr. Younger indicated to me back in December that he had PTSD and a brain tumour,” McVicar said. On Tuesday, Younger said he had been diagnosed with PTSD, however, he’s never been diagnosed with a brain tumour and said he never told McVicar he had been.

Younger has been at the centre of much controversy after a secretly recorded conversation between him and McVicar was released last week.

As for McVicar’s future, McNeil said he will have to apply for jobs just like any other Nov Scotian.

“If you’re asking me…do I have some job for him to go to? No I don’t,” he said.

In the recording, McVicar is heard suggesting Younger’s wife could be given a personal services contract with the Nova Scotia government to “bridge” the couple while Younger was out of cabinet.

McVicar maintains, though, that “no job was offered and certainly no job was taken by Ms. Younger.”

Opposition unsatisfied

“Let’s be clear; Mr. McVicar resigned because he got caught doing something wrong,” said Jamie Baillie, leader of the Progressive Conservative Party of Nova Scotia.

“Nova Scotians are going to want to know why the premier allowed such unethical things to happen at the highest levels of his office.”

“The premier has consistently defended the indefensible until there’s no place else for him to go but to offload people who have become political liabilities,” said Maureen MacDonald, Nova Scotia New Democratic Party Leader.
