TORONTO — An off-duty Durham Regional Police officer has been charged after allegedly crashing his vehicle into a tree while intoxicated and leaving the scene.
Police responded to a call of a vehicle crashing into a tree in the early hours of Saturday morning in the Liberty Street North and Taunton Road area of Bowmanville, Ont.
Officers found the vehicle, which has “extensive damage,” but the driver had left the scene. A police K-9 team searched the area with the help of a York Regional Police helicopter but did not located the driver.
Police said a passerby drove the man to Lakeridge Health hospital in Oshawa and he was located by police at about 4:20 a.m.
A sergeant attended the hospital and charged Det. Scott Robertson, 36, of the Durham Regional Police fraud unit, with impaired driving and failing to report. He was released on a promise to appear in court at a future date.
Anyone with new information about this incident is asked to call the Durham Regional Police Professional Standards Unit or Crime Stoppers.
