Seven American Music Awards moments you should know about

Did you miss the American Music Awards Sunday night? Not to worry, we’ve got you covered.

As with most award shows, there are a few moments of goodness mixed with a whole lot of filler. With help from the folks at ET Canada, we present seven things you need to know about last night’s AMAs. Canada was represented, that’s for sure.

1. Celine Dion brought the house down

Our grande dame of music, Celine Dion, paid tribute to the people of Paris and the victims of the recent terrorist attacks by singing Edith Piaf’s “Hymne a L’Amour.” Of course, she nailed it.

2. Meghan Trainor turned up the heat with Charlie Puth

“All About That Bass” singer Meghan Trainor delivered a beautiful rendition of “Like I’m Gonna Lose You,” and then the cameras panned to Charlie Puth, who hit the stage to perform “Marvin Gaye.” Musically, the segment was a treat, but then the two randomly started making out for an extended period of time.

3. Yes, there was a Star Wars musical tribute

The entire world is all about the upcoming Star Wars movie, so why wouldn’t the AMAs be, too? A capella group Pentatonix sang the Star Wars theme song backed by a full-on orchestra. OK, it was a thinly-veiled promotion for the film, but as fans, we’re not complaining.

4. Anna Kendrick reminded us of why we love her

Pitch Perfect 2 won the Top Soundtrack AMA, and star Anna Kendrick took the mic to accept it. Dripping with sarcasm and clever insults, Kendrick injected a nice dash of humour into the proceedings.

5. Justin Bieber took a shower on stage

Well, not literally. But when the Canadian superstar delivered a rendition of his new hit “Sorry,” the rain came pouring down on top of him. Looks like dancing in the rain has become a thing again.

6. Alanis Morissette, 2015 version

In case there hasn’t been enough ’90s nostalgia for you, the AMAs brought Alanis Morissette back to the stage. She performed “You Oughta Know” along with special guest Demi Lovato.

7. Nicki Minaj is the queen of stink-eye

Or maybe not. But social media was abuzz when Jennifer Lopez took the stage to sing and dance along to a medley of this year’s biggest hits, including Nicki Minaj’s “Anaconda.” While JLo wiggled her butt to the song, Minaj sat in the audience, stone-faced. Twitter was convinced that she was throwing shade at the pop singer.

Can’t wait for more award ceremonies? Up next is the People’s Choice Awards, which will air on Jan. 6, 2016.
