Saskatoon catholic schools keep February break

The Greater Saskatoon Catholic Schools Board of Education has approved next year’s school calendar, which includes a shortened Christmas break and a week-long break for students in February.

The Greater Catholic School Board made their decision on Monday after revisiting their initial decision to eliminate the February break on April 16th.

While Saskatoon catholic students will not begin school until after the Labour Day weekend, there are three staff-only days at the end of August.

In February, there will be two professional development days for teachers during the week-long break for students.

“Because Saskatchewan winters can get exceptionally long and cold, our school communities clearly told us that they wanted to keep the full-week February break so students and families could rest and recharge,” said chair of the Greater Saskatoon Catholic Schools Board of Education Diane Boyko.

Trustees first discussed the school-year calendar at their February 6th board meeting and passed a tentative calendar that eliminated the February break.

However, they indicated at that time they would not finalize the school year schedule until Saskatoon Public Schools had set its calendar.

The Saskatoon Public School Board decided on March 13th to keep the February break for the 2012-2013 school year.

New legislation to change the school year was introduced by the Saskatchewan government in December, 2011 to change the school year start date to after the Labour Day long weekend.
