Agreement finalized for new Saskatoon bridge project

SASKATOON – A financial agreement has been reached for Saskatoon’s largest construction venture. The city announced Wednesday it has finalized a project agreement with Graham Commuter Partners for the North Commuter Parkway and the Traffic Bridge project.

The project will cost a total of $497.5-million over a 33 year span covering construction for the first three years followed by a 30-year operation and maintenance agreement with the city retaining ownership throughout the contract period.

The federal and provincial governments are chipping in $116-million towards the project.

Officials said work on the project could start within weeks.

“What we think is going to happen is that they’re going to start with the Traffic Bridge,” said Jeff Jorgenson, the city’s general manager of transportation and utilities.

“We’re anticipating construction starting before Christmas – we’re hopeful as is Graham – North Commuter Parkway portion hopefully in the New Year.”

Both bridges and extensions at Central Avenue and McOrmond Drive are expected to be operation by October 2018.
