Rainfall warnings remain in effect for Metro Vancouver

The rain is still pounding down in Metro Vancouver this morning, with several rainfall warnings still in effect.

The downpour has been over the South Coast since Thursday morning. It’s caused fast-running creeks and dangerous roads.

A pedestrian was seriously injured after being hit by a car at the corner of Hastings and Renfrew Streets Thursday evening.

Several BC Ferries trips were also cancelled due to the stormy weather, including sailings between the mainland and Vancouver Island. Traffic is already backing up at the Tsawwassen Terminal this morning.

As of 5 a.m. Friday, Pitt Meadows has received 95 mm of rain. Port Moody, 85 mm, Stanley Park, 80 mm, West Vancouver, 78 mm and White Rock, 12 mm.

It is enough to cause localized flooding, especially if catch basins aren’t cleared.

“We do worry about flooding in some high-volume areas where there’s a high volume of leaves on the street,” said a worker with the City of Vancouver. “And so we do want to make sure we’re removing the leaves as quickly as possible from that location.”

Drivers are also being warned to slow down and be prepared for winter conditions on the highways. There is compact snow and winter conditions on the Coquihalla Highway and Rogers Pass this morning.
