WATCH: Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital’s Courage Awards

EDMONTON – The Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital is celebrating its 10th annual Courage Awards Thursday. The ceremony honours former patients who have inspired others in their rehabilitation journey.

Patients are nominated by Glenrose staff, including physicians, nurses, and physical, occupational and speech therapists. This year’s recipients are 15-year-old stroke survivor Nicholas Mudryk, 14-year-old spinal cord injury survivor Lincoln Grayson, 20-year-old brain injury survivor Renaye Wade, and 78-year-old Jerry Wilson, who has both visual and hearing impairments.

Over the past decade, Global Edmonton Health Reporter Su-Ling Goh has emceed eight of the nine Courage Award ceremonies (there was no official ceremony the first year).

She says she only missed one because of her maternity leave in 2010.

“I truly look forward to volunteering for the Courage Awards every year, because the recipients never cease to amaze me,” said Goh.

She also writes and produces a TV segment on each recipient, which is aired on Global Edmonton prior to the ceremony (about 32 segments so far).

Global photographers and editors also pour their hearts into the stories.

Goh says the best part about the Courage Awards is getting to know the recipients.

“They’ve been through unthinkable pain – both physical and emotional – yet they are all so positive, and truly making a difference for others.”
