UPDATE: Teen charged in fatal northern Alberta shooting

EDMONTON – Two men were killed in separate shootings Tuesday in northwestern Alberta, and a teenager is facing charges in one of the deaths.

The first shooting happened at 3 a.m. on the Atikameg First Nations near High Prairie, where RCMP responded to a call saying someone had reportedly been shot.

Mounties arrived to find that the victim, a 35-year-old man, had died of his injuries. On Wednesday Arlen Chase Chalifoux, 18, was charged with one count of second degree murder.

Chalifoux was arrested and remains in police custody. He’s scheduled to make his first appear in High Prairie Provincial Court on the morning of November 16th.

The second shooting happened 130 kilometres away in Peace River around 7 p.m. Officers arrived at the scene, where a 24-year-old man was also found to have died from his injuries. No suspects have been identified.

The K Division Major Crimes Unit was called in to assist with both cases. The Peace River investigation also received help from a canine unit and the Peace River Forensic Identification Unit.

The two deaths are not believed to be connected.
