MOOSE JAW – Saskatchewan’s health minister says many features of the new Moose Jaw hospital will be “firsts” in the province.
Fittingly, the man the building is named after, was considered one-of-a-kind.
Dr. Fred H. Wigmore was a surgeon in Moose Jaw for 44 years.
“I guess it means a bit of history,” said his son, Dr. C. Fred Wigmore.
Combined, the pair have practiced medicine for 75 years and counting in the Friendly City.
After settling in Moose Jaw in 1939, the elder Dr. Wigmore served on various health care boards in Saskatchewan, in addition to his role as chief of surgery.
Wigmore, who passed away in 1999, even helped design two wings of the previous Moose Jaw Union Hospital.
Now, the new Dr. F.H. Wigmore Regional Hospital will benefit from the family’s donation of $2.5 million.

“Just as Dr. Wigmore served as an inspiration to his fellow medical professionals, the gift from the Wigmore family will serve as an inspiration to others to support health care,” said James Murdock of the Moose Jaw Health Foundation.
“It’s really gratifying to have people say ‘thank you’ a lot in any job you do,” Dr. C. Fred Wigmore said. “I think that’s a glue that keeps a lot of people in this area.”
They’re showing thanks on what would have been Wigmore’s 108th birthday.
“I’d say, ‘Good job dad, you deserve it.’ ”
