Alberta government to disclose more public sector salaries

EDMONTON – On Thursday, the Alberta government will announce it’s including more groups in legislation surrounding disclosure of public sector salaries and compensation.

Minister of Justice Kathleen Ganley will speak about Bill 5 – the Public Sector Compensation Transparency Act – at 3:30 p.m. MT. A media briefing will be held earlier in the day.

She’s expected to talk about extending the disclosure of salaries and other compensation to groups including agencies, boards and commissions.

In December 2013, the Alberta government brought in new rules that made salaries and other benefits of top earners public under Premier Alison Redford. Those rules applied to employees with base salaries above $100,000.

Then, in January 2014, despite a last-minute court injunction preventing the publication of Crown prosecutor salaries, the province made all other Alberta government employees’ compensation details public.

More than 3,000 government employees with base salaries above $100,000 – and their compensation details – were posted online. However, the list did not include board agencies or commissions.
