Recount confirms federal NDP win in northern Saskatchewan

A close vote has been decided in northern Saskatchewan. Federal NDP candidate Georgina Jolibois was declared elected Tuesday after a judicial recount in the riding of Desnethé–Missinippi–Rivière Churchill.

Elections Canada says Jolibois and Liberal Party of Canada candidate, Lawrence Joseph, were separated by a mere 71 votes at the end of the 42nd general election held on Oct. 19.

Following the recount, the difference grew in favour of the NDP candidate to 82 votes.

Justice N.G. Gabrielson of the Saskatchewan Court of Queen’s Bench completed the recount Tuesday.

Last week, Elections Canada said a candidate requested the recount in the electoral district of Desnethé–Missinippi–Churchill River.
